How We Build a Formula

Research First

Research First

Before any ingredient enters a Kaia formula, the team reviews the clinical literature. Published human trials. Studied doses. Real outcomes. If the evidence is not there, neither is the ingredient.

Source with Standards

Source with Standards

Raw materials are selected for extract quality and standardization. We specify the active compound concentrations (like 95% curcuminoids or 36 mg PACs) because that is what the clinical research measured.

Formulated in France

Formulated in France

Our two supplement systems, Cycle System and Urinary Duo, are formulated and manufactured by a French laboratory in the Loire Valley. Cramp Patch is formulated in France and manufactured in the United States. Each supplement pairs two separately packaged formulas: Day + Night for Cycle System, Botanical + Probiotic for Urinary Duo.

Test Everything

Test Everything

Raw materials tested on arrival. Active ingredients verified by HPLC. Heavy metals screened by ICP-MS. Full microbial panels run. Stability tested at multiple time points. If anything falls outside specification, the batch does not ship.

Seal and Protect

Seal and Protect

Every dose is individually sealed in a pharmaceutical-style blister pack. Not for looks. Because loose capsules in a bottle degrade every time the cap comes off. Blister sealing locks out moisture, air, and light from production to the moment you take it.

Cycle System

Cycle System

Day + Night Capsules | PMS Support

A Day + Night capsule system with 13 active ingredients across two targeted formulas. 28 capsules per box (14 Day + 14 Night). Designed for PMS support: cramps, bloating, water retention, irritability, and sleep disruption.

The Evidence

Evidence at a Glance

Ingredient Daily Dose Studied Dose Range What the Research Found
Fennel extract 100 mg 100-200 mg Comparable to common pain relievers for menstrual cramp pain; superior to placebo (meta-analysis)
Rhodiola extract 100 mg 200-600 mg Studied for stress resilience and mental stamina.
Yarrow extract 80 mg Varied (tea form) Significant pain relief vs placebo in one RCT
Lemon balm 80 mg (2.5% rosm. acid) 300-600 mg Improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety in recent trials
Turmeric (95% curc.) 50 mg + 5 mg piperine Higher standalone Reduced total PMS severity score vs placebo in double-blind RCT
Passionflower 50 mg 90-700 mg Improved sleep quality vs placebo in double-blind RCT
Chaste tree (Vitex) 40 mg 20-40 mg Associated with PMS symptom improvement in multiple meta-analyses of RCTs
Ginger extract 10:1 10 mg (=~100 mg powder) 750-2000 mg powder Significant pain reduction vs placebo in multiple trials. Part of multi-ingredient system here.
Magnesium (bisgl.) 30 mg elemental 200-400 mg Reduced PMS mood and fluid symptoms in RCTs.
Black pepper (piperine) 5 mg 5-20 mg Increases curcumin absorption.
Vitamin B6 (P5P) 5 mg (both caps) 50-100 mg Vitamin B6 is included as P5P, an active form of B6, because it supports key metabolic and neurological functions. The label shows more than 500% Daily Value because Daily Value is a baseline reference amount, not a symptom-support target. In published PMS studies, vitamin B6 was typically used at much higher doses of 50 to 100 mg, so Kaia’s 10 mg functions here as a meaningful supporting level within the full formula.
Lavender + Orange oils 2 mg each 80 mg (oral) Calming aromatherapy evidence. Sensory contribution at this dose.
Vitamin D3 2.5 mcg Much higher PMS benefits mainly in deficiency correction. Nutritional support here.

Ingredient Detail

What it does: One of the most studied botanicals for broad PMS symptom relief. Multiple meta-analyses of double-blind RCTs confirm it can meaningfully reduce irritability, mood swings, bloating, and breast fullness over 1 to 3 cycles. This is not a trendy add-on. It is a clinically serious ingredient.

Why this dose: The most studied Vitex preparation (Ze 440) was tested at 20 mg daily. Our 40 mg uses a different extract ratio. Dose is matched to the specific extract profile, not arbitrary.

Key studies: Csupor et al., 2019 (meta-analysis): Women on Vitex 2.57x more likely to see PMS symptom remission vs placebo. PubMed: 31780016. Schellenberg, BMJ, 2001 (landmark RCT, n=170): Superior to placebo across irritability, mood, bloating over 3 cycles. PubMed: 11159568.

What it does: Clinically studied for menstrual cramp discomfort and abdominal comfort. In published meta-analyses, fennel showed significantly better results than placebo for reducing menstrual cramp intensity, with some studies reporting effects comparable to standard analgesics.

Why this dose: Clinical trials used extract doses in the 100 to 200 mg range. Our 100 mg aligns with studied protocols and provides meaningful support for the muscle contractions involved in cramps.

Key studies: Lee et al., Nutrients, 2020 (meta-analysis of RCTs): Fennel comparable to conventional drugs for menstrual pain; superior to placebo. Open-access. PubMed: 33182553. Modaress Nejad, 2006 (RCT): 80% pain relief vs 73% with NSAID comparator. PubMed: 17037712.

What it does: Ginger has one of the stronger evidence bases for menstrual cramp comfort, with multiple meta-analyses confirming pain reduction versus placebo. Here it works as part of the broader Day formula rather than as a standalone hero dose.

Why this dose: Most trials used 750 to 2000 mg ginger powder. Our 10 mg of 10:1 concentrate equals roughly 100 mg powder equivalent. The ginger literature is real; this formula uses it as one player in a multi-ingredient system.

Key studies: Daily et al., Pain Medicine, 2015 (meta-analysis, 7 RCTs): Ginger more effective than placebo for menstrual discomfort. PubMed: 26177393. Rahnama et al., 2012 (RCT): Ginger reduced pain severity vs placebo. Open-access. PubMed: 22781186.

What it does: Included to reinforce the formula's comfort profile. Curcumin has direct RCT evidence for reducing PMS severity across mood, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Piperine is paired with it because curcumin absorption is naturally low without an enhancer.

Why this dose: PMS trials often used higher standalone curcumin doses. Our 50 mg works alongside fennel, chaste tree, and ginger, with piperine to maximize what your body actually absorbs.

Key studies: Khayat et al., 2015 (double-blind RCT, n=70): Curcumin reduced PMS severity across mood, behavioral, and physical domains over 3 cycles. PubMed: 26051565. Bahrami et al., 2021 (triple-blind RCT, n=80): Curcuminoid + piperine reduced PMS symptoms significantly. PubMed: 34708460.

What it does: An adaptogen with human trial data for stress resilience and mental stamina. It is not PMS-specific, but the fatigue, irritability, and brain fog that come with hormonal shifts are exactly the kind of stress it was studied for.

Why this dose: Studied at 200 to 600 mg for stress-related fatigue. Our 100 mg adds adaptogenic support to the Day formula without overloading it.

Key studies: Olsson et al., 2009 (RCT): Standardized extract SHR-5 improved fatigue measures vs placebo. PubMed: 19016404. Hung et al., 2011 (systematic review): Mixed results, some trials positive for mental performance. PubMed: 22643043.

What it does: Chosen for the Night capsule because magnesium helps muscles relax. The bisglycinate form is chelated for higher absorption and less digestive discomfort than the cheap oxide form you see in most supplements.

Why this dose: The PMS magnesium literature uses 200 to 400 mg. Our 30 mg is part of a broader Night system, not the formula's single hero. It works alongside passionflower, lemon balm, and lavender to build a calming profile that is greater than any one ingredient.

Key studies: Facchinetti et al., 1991 (RCT): Magnesium reduced PMS mood symptoms. PubMed: 2067759. Walker et al., 1998 (crossover trial): Magnesium reduced fluid retention and bloating symptoms. PubMed: 9861593.

What it does: Chosen to anchor the Night capsule's sleep profile. Double-blind RCTs show passionflower can improve sleep quality, and polysomnography data (objective brain-wave measurement, not just diaries) confirms it increases total sleep time.

Why this dose: Sleep trials used 90 to 700 mg. Our 50 mg is designed to work alongside lemon balm, lavender, and magnesium. The combined Night profile is stronger than any one ingredient alone.

Key studies: Ngan & Conduit, 2011 (double-blind RCT): Passionflower significantly improved subjective sleep quality vs placebo. PubMed: 21294203. Lee et al., 2020 (RCT with polysomnography): Increased total sleep time in insomnia subjects. PubMed: 31714321.

What it does: Brings a studied calming role to the Night formula. A recent double-blind crossover RCT found 87% of participants reported improved sleep quality. Standardized to rosmarinic acid for batch-to-batch consistency.

Why this dose:
Studied at 300 to 600 mg standalone. At 80 mg in a multi-ingredient Night formula, it reinforces the calming profile without redundancy.

Key studies: 2024 double-blind crossover RCT: Improved sleep quality, 87% of participants reported improvement. PubMed: 39683592. Cases et al., 2011: Improved mood and cognitive function. PubMed: 22198096.

What it does: Supports abdominal comfort during menstruation. Traditional roots in easing menstrual discomfort.

Why this dose: Studied in tea form in a double-blind RCT with positive results. Capsule extract dose consistent with traditional use.

Key studies: Mirghafourvand et al., 2016 (double-blind RCT): Yarrow significantly reduced pain scores vs placebo. Open-access. PubMed: 26238568.

What it does: The formula's supporting cast. P5P is the active form of B6 (your body can use it directly, unlike the cheap pyridoxine in most supplements). Vitamin D is nutritional support. The essential oils add a calming sensory layer at aromatic doses, not clinical ones.

Why this dose:
These are not the formula's headliners. They play specific supporting roles: B6 for neurological function, D3 for baseline wellbeing, essential oils for the Night capsule's wind-down experience.

Key studies: Wyatt et al., BMJ, 1999: B6 reduced PMS symptoms vs placebo (systematic review of 9 RCTs). PubMed: 10466722. Kasper et al., 2010: Oral lavender (Silexan) at 80 mg reduced anxiety; Kaia's 2 mg is an aromatic contribution. PubMed: 20683190.

Heather extract 150 mg Traditional Traditional European phytotherapy. French Pharmacopoeia recognized.
Cranberry (36 mg PACs) 120 mg extract 36+ mg PACs/day 18% reduced risk in meta-analysis of 10 RCTs at the 36 mg+ PAC threshold
Uva ursi extract 100 mg Varied Symptom relief in modern RCTs; traditional European use recognized by EMA

Ingredient Detail

What it does: One of the strongest evidence bases in the urinary supplement category. A-type cranberry PACs inhibit bacterial adhesion to urinary tract walls. This is not folklore. It is backed by a Cochrane review of 50 RCTs and a 2024 meta-analysis that pinpointed the 36 mg PAC threshold as the dose that moves the needle.

Why this dose: We deliver exactly 36 mg PACs because that is the threshold the meta-analyses validated. Not 10 mg. Not "cranberry juice powder" with unmeasured PAC content. A concentrated 30% extract, standardized and verified.

Key studies: Xiong et al., Frontiers in Nutrition, 2024 (meta-analysis, 10 RCTs): 36 mg+ PACs reduced risk (RR 0.82). PubMed: 39668896. Williams et al., Cochrane, 2023 (50 RCTs): Cranberry probably reduced risk in women (RR 0.74). PubMed: 37947276. Howell et al., 2010 (multicenter RCT): 36 mg PACs produced significant anti-adhesion activity. PubMed: 20070898.

What it does: Supports urinary tract comfort. Contains arbutin, used in traditional herbal medicine for urinary health across European, North American, and Asian traditions.

Why this dose:
Selected for short-term use within a multi-botanical formula. EMA
(European Medicines Agency) recognizes uva ursi for traditional urinary tract support.

Key studies: EMA Community Herbal Monograph: Recognized traditional use. Gagyor et al., BMJ, 2021 (REGATTA trial): RCT comparing uva ursi to fosfomycin in uncomplicated urinary symptoms. PubMed: 34111592.

What it does: Traditional European botanical for urinary comfort. The French Pharmacopoeia includes Calluna vulgaris as a recognized urinary support plant.

Why this dose: Included at a dose consistent with traditional European phytotherapy. Complements cranberry and uva ursi.

Key studies: Traditional use in European phytotherapy. In vitro studies demonstrate antimicrobial activity against common urinary pathogens.

What it does: A strain-identified probiotic chosen to add a microbiome layer to the system. We name the exact strain because in probiotics, the species name alone tells you almost nothing. Two strains of the same species can have completely different biological effects. Most supplement brands skip this detail. We do not.

Why this dose: Manufactured and sealed in a separate capsule to protect viability. Live cultures are sensitive to moisture, heat, and botanical compounds. Blister-pack sealing is critical for delivering live organisms, not dead ones.

Key studies: L. rhamnosus strains have been studied for urinary and vaginal microbiome support in systematic reviews. LR06 has been investigated in gastric barrier pilot studies (PubMed: 25428676). Strain-specific urinary RCTs are limited.

What it does: Supports energy metabolism and normal mucous membrane function.

Why this dose: Vitamin B2 provides nutritional support at 108% Daily Value during urinary discomfort episodes. Because Daily Value is a reference amount rather than a ceiling, and riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin that does not tend to accumulate in the body, this modest level is intended to provide meaningful coverage in a short-window formula rather than a token dose.

Key studies: Established nutritional science.

Magnesium Body Cream

This is the one product on this page with no evidence section, and we would rather say that than invent one.

Magnesium Body Cream is a cosmetic. It is not a supplement and not a topical medicine. We do not claim it treats cramps, relieves pain, or corrects a magnesium deficiency, because those claims need clinical evidence we do not have.

What we can tell you is what is in it and who makes it. Magnesium chloride in a base of organic coconut oil and shea butter, with organic chamomile and organic lavender infused in olive oil. Twelve ingredients, every one of them printed on the jar, made in the USA by a small producer we buy from directly.

It is in the range because massage is worth something on its own, and because a cream you enjoy using is one you will actually use.

How to Read a Kaia Label

Every milligram, printed.
When you look at a Kaia label, you see every ingredient and its exact dose. That is not standard. Here is what to look for.
Label Image

No proprietary blends

Some brands group ingredients under one "proprietary blend" weight so you cannot see individual doses. Kaia lists every ingredient individually.

Extract ratios

"10:1 extract" means 10 parts raw plant concentrated into 1 part extract. "95% curcuminoids" means the turmeric extract is 95% active compound. These numbers matter.

Active compound weight

120 mg cranberry extract delivering 36 mg PACs." We tell you both the total extract and the active compound weight because that is what the clinical research measured.

Day + Night labeling

Each capsule type is labeled separately because they contain different ingredients designed for different times of day.

Frequently asked
questions

Because Kaia products are formulated as complete systems, not as collections of isolated ingredients copied from single trials. Published studies often examine one ingredient at a time over short periods. Kaia formulas are designed for real-world use over time, so ingredient levels are chosen in the context of the full formula, with attention to repeat use, tolerability, and overall formulation logic. Where indicated on pack, some products also include a higher labeled use option for more intense days.

Your body has different needs during the day and at night. The Day capsule or tablet focuses on comfort, mood, and daily function. The Night capsule or tablet focuses on relaxation, sleep, and recovery. Separating the formulas means each one can include the right ingredients at the right time without compromise. An adaptogen that supports daytime energy does not belong in a sleep formula, and a muscle relaxant does not belong in your morning capsule.

Our French laboratory in the Loire Valley specializes in botanical supplement formulation. France has a long tradition of rigorous botanical science and pharmacy-grade manufacturing standards. Every batch is tested using European Pharmacopoeia methods for purity, potency, and safety. The Cramp Patch is the exception: it is manufactured in the United States by a facility specializing in topical patch production.

Every time you open a bottle of loose capsules, you expose every remaining dose to moisture, air, and light. Over weeks or months, that degrades active ingredients. Blister packs seal each dose individually, so the last capsule is as protected as the first. For our probiotic capsule (Urinary Duo), this is especially important: live cultures are sensitive to moisture and heat, and blister sealing helps preserve viability through the shelf life.

Some supplement brands group multiple ingredients under a single weight (for example, '500 mg proprietary blend') without telling you how much of each ingredient is inside. That means you have no way to know whether you are getting a meaningful dose of anything. Kaia lists every ingredient individually with its exact milligram dose on the label. No hidden amounts. No guessing.

Yes. Certificates of Analysis for each production batch are available on our Transparency Hub. These include heavy metal screening, microbial purity panels, and active ingredient verification results.

Experiences vary by product and person. Take Cycle System daily only during its nine-day window: the seven days before your period and the first two days of your period. It is not intended for daily use throughout the month. Urinary Duo is for short-term use of up to seven consecutive days. Follow each product's directions; do not increase use beyond them to try to get faster results.

Yes. The products are designed to work together. Cramp Patch can be used alongside any supplement system for on-the-spot topical comfort. If you are taking other medications or supplements, consult your healthcare provider.

All supplement capsules use HPMC (vegetable) shells. No gelatin, no animal-derived ingredients. Kaia products do not contain gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, or eggs. If you have specific allergy concerns, consult the full ingredient list on the label or contact our team.

We monitor the clinical literature continuously. If new human trials change the evidence landscape for any ingredient we use, we update this page and, if warranted, reformulate. Transparency means keeping this page current, not freezing it at launch.
